In the Name of Allah, Most Beneficent, Most Merciful
THIS MONTH....

May 2008  [Rabi Al-Thani - Jamada I]

  • YMA Friday Night Program

Our weekly Friday Night Programs will continue every week at the Islamic Center of America beginning at 8:00 PM. The Friday Night programs are aimed at engaging and educating the youth.

    This Week:
Islam: Contributions to Modern Day Advancements

    Guest Speaker: Hajj Dan Mekled

"If there is much misunderstanding in the West about the nature of Islam, there is also much ignorance about the debt our own culture and civilization owe to the Islamic world. It is a failure, which stems, I think, from the straight-jacket of history, which we have inherited. The medieval Islamic world, from central Asia to the shores of the Atlantic, was a world where scholars and men of learning flourished. But because we have tended to see Islam as the enemy of the West, as an alien culture, society, and system of belief, we have tended to ignore or erase its great relevance to our own history." - Prince Charles, Heir to the British Monarchy at a presentation given at Oxford University

    • Do you know who the father of modern day Chemistry is and which Imam from Ahlul Bayt was his teacher?
    • Every purchase something from the Internet with a credit card?  You might be surprised to learn that a Muslim scholar is greatly responsible for enabling data be encryption so that e-commerce can securely take place.
    • Did you know who pioneered the first comprehensive book of medicine?
    • You might be surprised to learn who was really the first in flight.
